LET US PROMOTE GODLINESS

LET US PROMOTE GODLINESS

Three Sundays back, I preached on “Being the overseer of the people under our care”; and together we learned that overseeing the people under our care is Biblical, it maintain their safety, maintains our faithfulness to God, and God will crown us for doing that. Today, I want us to learn and discuss how important we are called to promote godliness as believers.

TITUS 2: 1-15 Paul writes to Titus the younger preacher instructing him on how to perform his pastoral duties as he leads the church in Crete.

Paul is encouraging Titus to teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine and one of them being to promote godliness – a godly living.

GODLINESS – is having a religious character (Collins Dictionary, 2007).

  • It is the state of living according to the laws and will of God.
  •  It is living the life-style that agrees with the ethical standards.

It should be remembered that the teachings Titus was instructed to teach to the church in Crete – it still apply to us today and these are the expectations from each group of believers in the church even today:

A: THE OLDER MEN

  • Self-controlled                              – Worthy of respect
  • Sound in faith                                – In Love & Endurance

B: OLDER WOMEN

  • Live godly life                        – Not to be slanderers / Liars
  • Not taking much wine – instead-Teaching good to younger women

C: YOUNGER WOMEN

  • Love their husband & children     – Be self-controlled & pure
  • Be busy at their homes and Kind – Be subject to their husbands

D: YOUNG MEN

  • Self-controlled
  • (As for TITUS) – Do what is good, show Integrity, Seriousness, & Soundness of Speech

E: Slaves/EMPLOYEES

  • Be subject to their masters in everything
  • Please/do good to them
  • Not to steal from them
  • Prove to be trustworthy

HOW CAN BELIEVERS (Above groups) THEN BE ABLE TO PROMOTE GODLINESS?

  • By allowing the GRACE OF GOD to Teach and Sustain us – in this present age: – the age full of challenges and temptations. General prayer for the groups for effective functioning and performance
